Caravan Life | Under the Stars | Michelle Whorwood May 01, 2018 07:00

Hi everyone, Michelle Whorwood here with a new layout featuring a cool cut file called Under the Stars featuring fun outdoorsy elements.

Here is my layout:

I really wanted to use this cut file and incorporate it with some recent pics of my girls at our caravan.  The only issue was trying to fit the caravan file and the pics on the page!  So I decided to include the photos within the caravan cut file itself and I loved how it turned out!  I really wanted to use the stars and add them whimsically at the top of the page.  I added in some stitching and left the strings flying in the wind so to speak.

Here is a close up:

Thank you for stopping by the blog today!  I hope I have inspired you to use photos within your cut files for an interesting but different take on your layouts.

Baby Violet | Michelle Whorwood | Peacock Feathers Background April 16, 2018 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!  Michelle Whorwood here with a new layout featuring the very cool Peacock Feathers Background file!

I had lots of fun creating this one.  I first cut the cut file out on some pale teal cardstock and adhered it to the dark charcoal cardstock and stitched it in down.  I love how the teal pops on the dark cardstock background.   Stitching the cut file is also a really great technique for adding interest and texture but also as an adhesive to stick down the file to your page.  I then bordered this whole piece onto some pale coral patterned paper.

I then started to build my page on top of the cut file.  I love how using background cut files adds lots of fun to your page so I wanted to keep the embellishments clustered around my photo so you can see the beautiful file - it is almost like a wall paper to your page.

Here are some close ups:

The cut file is brand new in store so check it out!!Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today!  I hope I have inspired you to create beautiful pages with the Just Nick background cut files.

Take care

Happy Together | Let's Party | Michelle Whorwood April 03, 2018 07:00

Hi everyone, Michelle Whorwood here with a new layout showcasing the 'celebrations' theme.  I decided to be a bit creative here and do a layout based on my girls saying they were swinging as high as a floating helium balloon and featuring the 'balloons' from the Let's Party cut file set.   Here is my page:

I first enlarged the balloons and strings and replicated them so I had 5 balloons.  I then added different patterned papers to the negative spaces in the balloons.  I then added my photos of my girls on the swings at the bottom of the bunch so it looks like the balloons are taking them away up into the sky!

Here are some close ups:

I hope you are enjoying our celebrations inspired pages this week!   Keep checking back for more inspiration from the other designers as the week goes on!

Take care

40 | Crop Circle Background | Michelle Whorwood March 22, 2018 07:00

Hi everyone, Michelle Whorwood back here again with a new layout featuring one of the fun background cut files in store, the Crop Circle Background.  It is a super cool circle design that can be used on multiple of scrapbooking themes.

Here is my layout

I cut the cut file out on an ombre style patterned paper as it gave the file interest, and colour without being too busy!   I then themed my embellishments. to match in with the colours in the cut file which is another popular technique right now!

Set Fire to the Rain | Rainy Days | Michelle Whorwood March 18, 2018 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!   Michelle here with a new layout featuring two new cut files in store, Rainy Days and Spring Doodle Flowers.

Firstly, I loved the cute flowers in the Spring Doodle flowers cut file so I cut out some on white cardstock.and then added some patterned papers to the negative spaces and layered them like a little bunch of florals as an embellishment cluster at the corner of my photo.

I loved the cut file of the clouds with the rain drops and really wanted to use it with this photo of my BFF and I at the Adele concert where it literally rained the entire time and we were totally soaked.   Adele rocked it in the rain with us and the concert was amazing!!  I backed the cut file in some blue patterned paper with the tiny dots and then added my title to it using the song title 'Set Fire to the Rain' which was amazing in concert in the freakin rain!  Super cool.

Cut files I used:

I totally enjoyed creating this layout with these two cut files!   I hope you have enjoyed my share today xx

2018 School Days | Doodle Doily | Michelle Whorwood February 19, 2018 01:24

Hi everyone, Michelle Whorwood here with a new layout featuring one of the cool doily designs in store - the 'Doodle Doily'!

I had loads of fun creating this with with a striking black cardstock background making the white doily pop on my page.  I cut the cut file out twice in two different sizes and used it to anchor both my photo and my embellishment cluster at the bottom right of my page.  I then mimicked the black and white theme with some of my embellishments as well.

Hearts a Flutter | Michelle Whorwood February 12, 2018 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans! Michelle Whorwood here with a new layout all about LOVE!
I chose to use the Hearts a Flutter Background file as I really liked the linear nature of the file and I thought it would look super cute with stitching down the centres for some added texture!

First, I cut it out on white cardstock and then used mists to create to colour the individual vertical lines of hearts in alternating pinks and yellows.  I really like the soft ombre effect.  I cut out my title using the Always Forever cut file and layered that on and around my photos.

Hooray | Heart Background 4 | Michelle Whorwood January 31, 2018 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!

Michelle Whorwood here with my second layout for this month!   I have been totally inspired by all the 'love' themed cut files in store.   I wanted to use the Heart Background 4 for my background as it is a fun and eclectic mix of different sized and shaped hearts.

Here is my layout:

I cut the file out on dark charcoal cardstock to create a bold effect and added some pops of pink and yellow into several of the negative spaces.  By using a darker cardstock it creates graphic statement which makes a striking contrast against my white background.  I then added my photo and layering embellishments in and around it.  I love how the pops of colour mixed in with the bold black cut file create a balanced yet fun page!

Happy New Year | Michelle Whorwood January 15, 2018 07:00

Hey, Just Nick Fans!

Michelle Whorwood here with my first post of the new year so I thought it would be fitting to have a 'New Years'  theme for my first page of 2018.  I went large with my cut file 'Happy New Year' adding it as a feature title on my page.   Here is my layout:

I cut out the title on an ombre patterned paper to give it depth and interest and then added a new year's photo tucked underneath.   The title also draws you into the photo and the grid design at the bottom of my page with a mix of Pink Fresh Studio, Crate Paper and Vicki Boutin embellishments  I added in some detail to the actual cut file with the bird and the flower chipboard from also from the Good Vibes collection.

Here are some close ups:

I had loads of fun going BIG with my title and designing my page around this large element!  I hope you have been inspired to upsize a cut file on one of your pages too!

Til next time xx

#Brrrr | Modern Trees | Michelle Whorwood December 16, 2017 14:59 1 Comment

Hi everyone!

Michelle here with a new layout featuring one of the newer cut files in store 'Modern Trees' .

One of the main things I love about the Just Nick cut files is just their versatility!  Today, I have used the tree file on a wintery layout (as here in NZ we have a summery christmas) and created a little scene of winter fun in my background.  I cut my trees out on some jade green cardstock in a variety of different sizes and then for some fun detail I added some stitching down the centres of them all.  I then added in some cute layering with lots of stickers and some chipboard framing around my photo.  Lastly I added in some cute little snow flakes around and on the trees!

Today | Star Cluster | Michelle Whorwood November 25, 2017 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans, Michelle W here with a new layout for 'Thankful' week on the blog.  Today, I have gone a little less traditional by not using a specific thankful cut file but instead creating a masculine fun layout with a thankful theme.  I hope you like it!

I used the 'Star Cluster' cut file as it is a super fun one to use for 'boy pages' and I've cut it out on white cardstock as I wanted to make a play on white on white with a cool colourful background.

I thought I would also share a small tip, my mat and my blade are starting to getting a bit dull so my cut isn't actually perfect on this file.  I'm actually waiting for a new blade to turn up but instead of just throwing out the cut as it wasn't perfect, I've added a few adhesive stars in the places were the cut was a bit damaged and you wouldn't even know that this was the case at all on my final page!

Here are some close ups:

I hope you have been enjoying our week of gratitude this week and that you have been inspired by all the design teams' creations!!

Take care xx

#Cute | Feather 3 | Michelle Whorwood November 13, 2017 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!

Michelle W here today with a new layout with one of the new cut files in store called Feather 3.  This one is a super pretty set of 3 feathers which could be added to lots of different layouts both masculine and feminine.

Here is my layout:

I was initially looking at using this cut file with 3 different photos so I cut all three feathers with white cardstock.  When I was looking for photos to use on my layout, I however, found 2 photos that I really liked so I decided to instead use 2 feather shapes on my page.  You may notice that on the "right hand" feather is actually the middle blank feather on the cut file with the one on the outline feather layered on top.  This works perfectly and adds dimension and texture in a subtle way.

I also really liked the first feather with the 'swirl' shapes which is quite a similar shape to a 'Koru' here in New Zealand.  I don't often use feathers on my scrapbooking pages so I really enjoyed challenging myself to create this one.  I liked the symmetry of having the two photos side by side layered up on both the feathers.  To connect them, I added in some embellishments down the centre of both of my photos and then added in some chevrons that I fussy-cutted out from PinkFresh patterned paper to lead you into the rest of my page and anchor my title.

Here are some close ups:

I hope you have enjoyed my layout I have shared today.  Do you like to use feathers on your pages?

Everyday Moments | In Bloom | Michelle Whorwood October 18, 2017 07:00

Hi, Just Nick Fans!  Michelle Whorwood here with a new layout to share with you using one of the gorgeous floral cut files called 'In Bloom' that is a recent addition to the store.

When I was searching through the store for inspiration for this post, this particular cut file stood out to me as one that I could really work for a layout based around two clusters.  Sometimes, when I create my layouts I use my photo as the starting point but this time I really wanted my layout to flow from the cut file itself.

My design is quite a simple one, but I first cut out the In Bloom cut file in white cardstock and chose a grey patterned paper as my background which I think makes the 'white' pop out against.  Then I decided that I was going to make this layout with two photos and add the cut file behind them to basically anchor them to the page and give my layout some structure to worth with.  I really loved the teal with the grey so I backed two of the florals in the cut file designs with the teal and navy patterned paper and again this pops off the grey background as well.  Lastly I added in some more floral embellishments and clusters of stars to my design.

Some close ups:

I hope you have enjoyed my layout share today and that I have inspired you to use a cut file to anchor your photos and embellishments on your pages.

Take care xx

Dumplings | Leaf Background 2 | Michelle Whorwood October 11, 2017 07:00

Hey Just Nick Fans!! Michelle W here with a new layout featuring 'fall' designs which is the theme this week.  I really am enjoying some of the very cool fall backgrounds and I really like cutting out leaves on my silhouette.  Leaves are so easy to use for both feminine or masculine layouts, my layout is about my daughter eating out a local market which has a cool autumnal vibe too it I think.

Here is my layout:

I really wanted to keep it simple with a soft mixed media background in autumnal colours of peachy oranges  and pale mustard - and then add my cut file over the top of that to create some texture but still keeping my colour palette soft and understated.  The cut file I used is called Leaf Background 2.  I really liked these cute little leaves which aren't quite your usual leaf design.

Here are some close ups:

I decided to have a central design on my layout which is a bit different for me as usually I put my photo off centre but this gave me an idea to add my embellishments right around the edges of my photo which allowed me still have focus on the cut file which frames my photo really nicely but still meant I could add some fun embellishing too.  I really like how cut files just add to my layouts and takes them to the next level.

I hope you have enjoyed my fall layout today and that you have been inspired by this week's designers showcasing fall designs that can be found in store.

Take care

Foliage Background | Michelle Whorwood September 22, 2017 07:00 1 Comment

Hi Just Nick Fans!  Michelle Whorwood here with a new layout featuring one of the newer background files in store the 'Foliage Background'.  I was immediately drawn to this particular file as I felt it fit my photo really well of my two daughters in Fiji last weekend.  I really like the tropical vibe of the flower shape which reminds me of a frangipani.

I really wanted to keep my layout simple, fun, summery and happy.  So I cut out the cut file on some pale yellow cardstock and adhered it to some white cardstock as my background. I then layered on some project life cards in tropical colours under my photo and embellished with lots of embellishments from the Maggie Holmes Carousel collection too.

I really loved how this layout came together.  The focus on the cut file with the white space of the border around it really draws your eye into the photo so I wanted to keep this space relatively clear and only added a few stars to the cut file and in the corners.

Dream Big | Michelle Whorwood September 12, 2017 07:00 1 Comment

Hi everyone, Michelle here with a new layout using 'Words' as inspiration for all the Just Nick Designers this week.  Here is my layout:

I had lots of fun creating my layout and have used three different cut files.  I really loved the new 'Leaf Circle Background' file and cut this out on white cardstock to create the basis of my layout and included my photo of my girls into one of the negative spaces of the cut file.  I also added in some patterned paper to a couple of the other circles for a bit of added interest.

I also really wanted to add word to my page in a form of a title going down one side of my page.  So I used the 'Script Alpha 2' Cut file and welded together some of the letters to create 'be you' and cut this out on some white cardstock.  I then added some Shimmerz Mist 'Pretty in Pink' to give it a soft pale pink colour and stitched through the words for some added texture!   I then added the 'Dream Big' cut from the Dream Big Cut File set also just on some white cardstock.  I love the freshness of the white on white look and adding pops of colour with patterned paper and embellishments to finish off my page!

The cut files I have used:

I hope you have enjoyed my layout today and that you have been inspired to try out some cut titles on your pages!

Play Together | Cloud Background 2 | Michelle Whorwood August 30, 2017 07:00

Hi everyone, Michelle here with a new layout to share with you featuring the Cloud Background 2 cut file.  I really like using cloud cut files as they are such fun to use and they are really versatile for all occasions!!   I have used a photograph of my youngest daughter and friends lying down on the grass looking at the sky (or clouds)!  Here is my layout:

One of the things I really like about this particular cut file is that some of the clouds have vertical lines in them for interest and some texture on your page.  I have cut out the file on patterned paper which has subtle pattern on it so it isn't a solid colour but isn't too busy on the page either.  This cut file would look amazing backed with patterned paper too.  But I left mine natural and added some mixed media splatters on my background.

Now I am quite frugal when it comes to my supplies and like to be able to use up the left over pieces from the cut file.  This time, the cut file file produced some cool cloud negative detail.  Instead of using them as traditional clouds, I added three of these layered under my photo and they look like scallops!  This is a fun way of adding more colour but also acts as an anchor point for my photo.

Lastly, I really like how the cut file filled my page but also allowed me to add in some elements in different parts of the cut file.  As you can see below and above I have added several different areas of embellishments clustered at the top, bottom and the sides of my layout.  This design allows interest but also draws your eye into my photo or the focal point of my page.

I hope you have enjoyed my layout today!

Summer | Michelle Whorwood August 12, 2017 07:00

Hi everyone! Michelle here with a new summer filled layout to share with you today!  I really love creating summer layouts especially down here in NZ when it is actually Winter it makes me feel a lot warmer and keeps me sane until summer arrives for us again. Here is my layout using the 'Summer' cut file to create my title!

As you can see below the 'Summer' cut file set includes five different cuts including gorgeous sun rays and lots of fun words along the summer theme! But for me I really wanted to go large with my title and I enlarged it to fit the full width of the 12x12 cutting mat and cut it out in a subtle patterned paper by Pink Fresh Studio.  I then backed it on the soft buttery yellow cardstock as this colour just reminds me of sunny sunshine.

Once I had decided that my title would sit across the page in the lower two thirds of my page I created some interest with a mixed media background and then tucked my photo in and slightly over the two MMs of SUMMER.  As the title is so large it doesn't matter that my photo slightly overlaps here as you can still make the the letters very easily.  I then created lots of little embellishing around my photo and also on the bottom part of the R to give it some balance with my bottom cluster, my photo cluster and then this finishes the visual triangle.

Here are some close ups:

I hope you have enjoyed my 'summery' layout today!

Celebrate You | Take Me to Paradise | Michelle Whorwood July 27, 2017 07:00

Hi everyone, Michelle here with a new layout to share with you! My youngest daughter recently turned 5 and had a flamingo themed party.   As soon as saw the Take me to Paradise cut file in store that featured the 'flamingo' and that 'tropical style leaf' I just knew it would be perfect to showcase the cake photo.

Here is my layout:

I started out by enlarging the 'tropical leaf' in this cut file and duplicated it so that I had 3 leaves to work with.  I wanted the leaves to look like they were 'holding' my photo and technically add a frame around it.   Next I cut out the 'flamingo' on pink patterned paper large enough to hug the right hand edge of my photo as well.   I love using cut files as giant embellishments on my page and it is so easy to do so.  The Take me to Paradise cut file has 6 different cut files on it which makes it a really good value for money as well.

Some close ups:

I hope you have enjoyed my latest layout today as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Matariki |In the Deep End Background | Michelle Whorwood July 11, 2017 07:00 1 Comment

Hi, Michelle Whorwood here!  I am super excited to be back on board with the Just Nick Design Team for a second term.  The Just Nick cut files are just my favourite cut files to work with and today I have another layout featuring two more cut files from store.

I really enjoy creating layouts with circle cut files as they are super fun to create and I enjoy embellishing in and around the circle designs.  Using a cut file such as the new cut file in store in the In The Deep End Background makes creating easy as you have a design to work with already. When I saw this in store I couldn't want to use it!  I decided to cut it out on some yellow cardstock for a change from white and then I backed several of the circles with patterned papers.  I then added my photos of my youngest daughter on a recent school trip to celebrate Matariki here in New Zealand.

I kept round elements by adding in some more circle embellishments within the circles of the cut file themselves and then also added some embellishments on and around my title and photos.

I cut my title out of patterned paper using the Handcut Letters cut file which is a fun alpha set which I have outlined in black pen on my layout to highlight it more on my busy page. I then added a couple of hearts with foam dots for more fun and interest.

I finished off my layout with some hand cut scalloped borders to frame the top and bottom of my page and some splatters of paint and mist.  I hope you have enjoyed my fun circle style layout.  Do you enjoy creating with circles as much as I do?

Fun times | Michelle Whorwood June 03, 2017 06:00

Hi everyone,

Michelle here with a new layout.  This week the Just Nick designers were all given a different  PageMaps Sketch to design a layout on. How cool is that!   This is my sketch:

And here is my take on the sketch:

I had lots of fun creating this layout from the sketch, I loved how I could create a page with several photos and also lots of layering elements with two different cut files from the Just Nick Store.   I really wanted to use some of the photo spaces in the sketch as different cut files and to do this I used the Geometric Cards cut file and cut this out on mint cardstock and also on some patterned paper.   I also added some of the scalloped borders from the Simple Scalloped Strips cut file to frame the different parts of layout too.

Some close ups:

I had so much fun creating this layout with the PageMaps sketch.  I hope I have inspired you today to get creating with some of the Just Nick Cut files and do check back and see more designers working with the PageMaps sketches for the rest of this week!

Pool Today | Words 4 and Ride the Wave Background | Michelle Whorwood May 29, 2017 06:00 1 Comment

Hi everyone, Michelle here with a new layout to share with you.  I am super excited about this one as it is one of my faves!   I have actually used two different files on this one being Words 4 and Ride the Wave Background.  Here is my layout and how I created it:

I really wanted to use the 'wave' background because my photos are all pool related.  But I wanted to create a grid style background so I replicated the cut file 4 equal times on white card stock and stitched it down in a grid.  I added some stitching to hold it down and also to give it some texture.

I had about 3 or 4 photos of the kids jumping into the pool on our recent holiday and as they were quite busy on the busy background I decided to create a fun and funky title using the 'Today' from the Word 4 cut file and put my photos inside the framed word.  I really love how the coral card stock allows the blues and brightness of my photos pop on my page and it is a super easy technique to do!

Here are some more close ups:

Happy Love | Delicate Butterflies | Michelle Whorwood May 09, 2017 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!

Michelle here with a new layout to share with you all today.  I have used two cut files on my layout, firstly the gorgeous Delicate Butterflies and also the Word 4 cut files which I used to create my title.

I new as soon as I saw this cut file I knew it would be perfect for these photos of my daughters entering the wearable arts competition at our caravan.   Yes my girls outfits are made out of paper!!  I really love the vintage vibe of this cut file which I cut out on a floral patterned paper from the Maggie Holmes Chasing Dreams collection.  As the name would suggest, this is a very delicate cut file - I would definitely recommend cutting it out with a sharp blade and not having a too sticky mat as it is very fine.  I really liked how the butterflies flowed down the page and I was able to tuck my photos in and around the file this helps your eye wander down the page from the first photo to my second photo too.

Next, I wanted to add a second cut file to my layout - and the Word 4 file worked perfectly for a fun title, and adding it on the larger butterflies added an extra layer of dimension to my page too.  I first cut out the outline in some teal coloured cardstock so that it matched the colours is in the embellishments and the cut file.  Then I cut it out on white cardstock to fill in the file and make it pop off the page.

I really enjoyed cutting out these files and using patterned paper added some interest and variance in colour to the butterflies and of course made it super easy to embellish with more of the Maggie Holmes collection.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today!  Do you cut files with mainly cardstock or do you use patterned paper as well?

Michelle xx

Today | Word 4 | Michelle Whorwood May 09, 2017 07:00 1 Comment

Hi everyone,

Michelle here with clean and simple layout featuring the Word 4 cut file.  I really wanted to keep my cut file the main focus of the page so I decided to cut it out LARGE!  I am really happy with the way this turned out.

First, I cut the file out on patterned paper so it gave me the green/blue outline and then I recut the file out on some cardstock, I first, made the cut file ever so slightly bigger so that it fit easily in the negative space of my outline.  I decided to keep my photo neutral and print it out in black and white and I love the softness of it agains the bold title!

I next added the globe to the middle of the 'O' as this is a photo of a recent overseas holiday it fit the theme really well and added some extra embellishments to the top!

I kept the rest of the embellishments quite simple as it is really all about the cut file here.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today, have you gone BOLD and BIG with your cut files and maybe created a title that is the main focus of your page?  I hope I have inspired you to do this one day on a layout.

Til next time xx

Together | Michelle Whorwood April 22, 2017 07:00

Hi everyone!

Michelle here with a new layout featuring the Butterfly Background 2 cut file.  As soon as I saw this file I wanted to use on it a layout as it is so pretty and whimsical. We recently had this family photo taken at my youngest daughters' 5th birthday party and I wanted a cut file that would frame my photo and add some background detail which the butterflies do perfectly.  Here is my layout:

I wanted to make my layout as pretty and whimsical as possible so I added a bit of mixed media to my background patterned paper by using a Shimmers Raspberry Sherbert Paste-eez texture paste applied with a credit card as well as adding some mint and gold mist.  I then added the Butterfly cut file cut out on white cardstock and then added some navy patterned paper to the larger butterflies.  I love the way the butterflies look on the textured background and how the white pops on it as well.  I then added some layers of pink, mint and yellow patterned papers and ephemera from the Maggie Holmes Chasing Dreams collection and then matted the patterned paper background back onto some white cardstock and added some machine stitching to create more texture to my page.

Close ups:

Thanks for stopping by the blog today!  I hope you have enjoyed my layout using this gorgeous butterflies background.

Hello Gorgeous | Michelle Whorwood April 07, 2017 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!

Michelle here with a new layout featuring some more of the gorgeous Just Nick Cut files.  I honestly just cannot get enough of them. They are so easy to use and love them for layering and adding interest to my page!

I have two of the newer cut files on my layout today.  Firstly, I have the Floral Swag which I have used to frame the photo of my two girls.  I love how this looks white on white with just a pop of colour in the floral centres.  It also complements my flowers that I have added to my layout as well.  Next I have created my title using another cut file called Hello Spring.  My gosh I love this one, BUT it isn't spring time here in NZ as we are going into Autumn but I didn't let that stop me and so I have cut the whole file out but fussy cut out the 'Spring' section and used the 'Hello' as part of my title.  I also  backed it in the same colour patterned paper that I have used for the Floral Swag.  I love how easy it is to adapt the Just Nick Cut files to work with the theme I am scrapbooking.

Here are some close ups:

Thank you for stopping by the blog today and I hope you have enjoyed my layout with the Just Nick Cut Files today.

Take care

Follow your dreams | Geometric Background 2 |Michelle Whorwood March 16, 2017 07:00

Hi

Michelle here with a new masculine layout featuring the Geometric Background 2 cut file.   This type of background is a perfect one for layouts of the boys in our lives and I wanted to utilise the different geometric shapes in the file to make little mini pocket style elements within the grid shapes.  I also wanted to share how you can adapt the cut files once you have downloaded them in the Silhouette software to make them your own and to work with your design.   This is the original file:

As you can see the original cut file is more A4 size and I wanted to widen the windows on the right hand side so I could fit my square photo and have more space to fit my embellishments.  To do this, after I traced the file, I right hand clicked on it to ungroup (release compound path).  I then dragged the outer border to fill my 12 x 12 inch space on the Silhouette software.  I then dragged the rectangle shapes out to meet my new enlarged border.  When I was happy with their size and shape, I regrouped the cut file and proceeded to cut it out.   This is the finished layout:

I cut the file out on white cardstock and layered it back on white cardstock and filled in most of the diagonal negative spaces with patterned paper.  I added my photo to the largest rectangle shape and added some fringing to the bottom as it was a square photo and didn't actually quite fill the shape - the illusion of another line on the cut file is actually a white border on my photo and added some embellishments  to the other negative spaces.

I then added the large title wood veneer and the little frames which hold the initials of my son, Liam's name and matched diagonal slope of the cut file and finished off with some sequin stars and small word phrases which matched the sentiment of my layout.

I hope you have enjoyed my layout I have shared with you today?  Do you alter cut files to suit your style or to fit the type of layout you are doing?  Maybe you would like to try this technique one day if you haven't already?

Thanks Michelle xx

Happy | Heart's a Flutter | Michelle Whorwood March 02, 2017 07:00

 Hi Just Nick Fans,

Michelle here with a new layout featuring the 'Hearts a Flutter' background.  We are showcasing different background files on the blog this week and I had been waiting for a good excuse to use this background file since it was released.

Here is my layout

I had lots of fun creating this layout.  I cut the file out on white cardstock and added patterned paper to the negative spaces in the smaller hearts.  Filling in the negative space of cut files is an effective way to add pops of colour to your layouts which is what I do quite regularly.  This time I decided to take this one step further and add strips of washi tape stickers to two of the largest hearts in the cut file.  It is really easy to do, when you cut out your cut file, keep the negative heart shape.  I then added the washi tape directly to the shape and inserted it back into the cut file on my page.  I don't know about you but I have rolls and rolls of washi that I need to use up so I think I will definitely use this technique again!

Some close ups:

Because I wanted the cut file to be the main focus on my page I didn't want to cover it with photos, I decided to add my photo to the far left hand side of my page.  I then added some stitching and embellishments to the cut file and added a couple of strips of patterned paper to anchor my photo to the left hand side of the page.  Finished off with a pretty rub on butterfly and some wood veneer hearts

Thanks for checking out my blog post, I hope I have inspired you to infill your negative space on your cut files with some washi tape.

Free Love | Michelle Whorwood February 16, 2017 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!

Michelle here with my take on the gorgeous freebie cut file 'Free Love'.  I really loved this file and it was so easy to use, I love that it has two options - hearts for more of a simple look or hearts and florals for a bit more intricacy and delicacy.  I decided to use the hearts and flowers design.

My layout is all about my 'love' for my kids.  I printed out a recent photo of each of my kids in black and white and framed them up in the Instax frames and added them under the large cut file.  The cut file itself I wanted to do in white card stock and layer it on white again as I think it just makes the cut file look extra pretty.  I loved the blue patterned paper that I have added into the L V and E negative spaces to define these letters more.

Once I had added the patterned papers I wanted to do something different in the O part of the cut file so I used this gorgeous butterfly rub on which I fussy cut out after adhering it to some white cardstock first.  I then added a few more embellishments to balance out my page.  I really didn't want to add to much as I wanted the photos and the cut file to be the focal point.

Some close ups:

Don't forget, this week only (today through to February 19th) you can grab the Free Love cut file for FREE just by using the code FREELOVE at checkout.  What are you waiting for - got get it and make something special!

XOXO | Camp Buddies | Michelle Whorwood February 01, 2017 07:00

Hi Just Nick fans!

Michelle here with a new layout - inspired by LOVE.  There are so many new gorgeous cut files coming in store in February all dedicated to love this month.  Here is my layout featuring two of the cut files.

Firstly, I cut out the 'XO Background 3' cut file on white cardstock and then layered patterned paper under two of the XOs for added interest.  I then cut out the row of hearts from the 'Love Actually' cut file on patterned paper and layered them at the bottom of my photo.  I then added lots of layers and embellishments on my page!  I really wanted to document this photo of my daughter and a friend from where we have our caravan. I thought it was super sweet and a perfect candid shot of the two of them together.

Summer Days | Sunny Days | Michelle Whorwood January 25, 2017 07:00

Hi everyone

Michelle here with a new layout to share with you today.  It is summer time here in NZ so I have been away on holiday creating family memories at our caravan.  Today, I am sharing a layout with 3 photos  of my girls taking part in some camp ground activities.

To create the circles on my layout I actually had kept some of the negative cut out circles from the Wheels in Motion Cut file from a previous layout I had created.  I usually like to keep anything I can and reuse them - especially circles as they are so handy to add to layouts.

Ive added lots of layering elements to my page and to add to the embellishments on my page, the elements in the Sunny Days  cut file set was perfect for summer photos. I cut them out on white cardstock and then tucked them in and around my photos to create some interest and texture on my page.  They stand out really well against my misting on my background too.

Some close ups:

I hope you have enjoyed my layout share! Til next time ...

Captured | Word Cut Files | Michelle Whorwood January 07, 2017 07:00

Hi everyone,

Michelle here with a new layout to share with you.  This week some of the design team have all been sharing layouts featuring 'words'.  For my layout I decided I wanted to combine several word cut files and create a wall paper effect down the right handside of my page. I did this by setting out the cut files I wanted to use on my Silhouette template as this gave me the perfect spacing for my page.

I really like using lots of words on my layout to convey the theme or feeling I have about my photo.  I first used the Marquee Alpha cut file to create the 'HELLO' and then combined it with the Girl Power cut file.   I really liked the mix of fonts and flowers on this set  so I ungrouped the file and rearranged it on my page.  I then cut it out on wood grain patterned paper and added it to my page in the negative spaces I added some embellishments to my page. I then added my photo to the left of the word wallpaper and added some more embellishments as well.

Some close ups

Thanks for visiting the Just Nick blog today!  I hope you have enjoyed my layout showcasing some of the word cut files in the shop - we are super lucky to have so many amazing word cut files to choose from here.

Snippets of our Lives | Holly Ring | Michelle Whorwood December 28, 2016 07:00 2 Comments

Hi Michelle here with a new layout featuring the Holly Ring cut file.  Even though this shape is technically Christmas inspired I decided it would work for a non-chrirstmas themed layout as well.

I cut the Holly Ring out on some green patterned paper to match in with the colours of the school uniform in my photo and tucked my photo into the middle making sure some of the cut file layered on and under it.  I then added some embellishments in a visual triangle for interest and balance on my page.  I really enjoyed using the circular shape to frame my photo and it allowed me the space to have several embellishment clusters around my page.

I hope you have enjoyed my layout share today!

12 Days of Giveways - Day 12! | Holiday Tags | Michelle Whorwood December 12, 2016 07:00 12 Comments

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the 12th day of Christmas on the Just Nick blog.  Today, I am showcasing the fun Holiday Tags cut file.

I knew that I wanted to make the holiday tags quite big and I liked the idea of having large 'Baubles' made out of the round tags on my layout to match the 3 photos of my kids.  The word JOY is featured in my Christmas photo shoot this year which highlights the Joy in the holiday tag as well.

I quite like adding some extra embellishments on my page which mirror the cut outs in the cut file - so extra christmas trees and stars and I also used the small cut out of the tree on my layout as well.

I decided to cut out the holiday tags in white to tie the cut file with with the JOY in  my photos and I love the crisp white on white look as well.  I then added colour by adding patterned paper under the negative space in the cut file and also with embellishments on my page.

Totally thankful | Michelle Whorwood November 26, 2016 07:00

Hi everyone,

Michelle here, today I am sharing a layout in the theme of 'Thankful'.  I have so many things to be thankful for in life I sometimes forget to celebrate the little things like heading to the beach after school to hang out with my kids in the glorious sunshine.  I am lucky here in New Zealand to live only 5 mins drive from a stunning beach so my layout is of my youngest playing in the sand the other day.

I have used one of the new background cut files in store called Feather background and cut this out on some white cardstock.  I then added a piece of patterned paper behind the feather design to create a wall paper like effect on my page.

Some close ups:

What have you got to be thankful for?  Will you play along with us this week and create a layout about something you are thankful?

Let's Celebrate and XOXO Cards November 18, 2016 07:00

Hi everyone,

Michelle here with two cards to share with you for card week!  I must admit I have only just really started making cards and don't make too many of them.  I am trying to make time to make more as they are so handy to have.

My first card I created was a birthday card.  I combined two cut files - I created my own doily from the Doilies cut file set as I love using doilies on my cards and layouts.  This file is great as it gives you four different options to choose from which makes it great value for money.    I then cut out the 'celebrate' from the Birthday Sentiments cut file set and added this to my card as well.

A close up:

For my second card I have created a more generic card for a non-specific occasion which is great to have on hand for when you need a card.  I used the Stack Em Up Background file first cut on white cardstock with some patterned paper layered underneath it.   I also cut out a Dahlia Flower and when I added it to my card and layered on some embellishments it started to look a bit dream catcher like so I added some feather embellishments dangling at the bottom. I added the XOXO sentiment which really makes it a versatile card for lots of different occasions from birthdays to general thank you cards.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today - I hope you have enjoyed seeing all our cards this week.

Too cute to spook | Michelle Whorwood October 27, 2016 07:00

Hi Just Nick Fans!  Michelle here with a Halloween layout of a different kind!  The cut files in store make it super easy to create spooky fun layouts for Halloween and there are lots of different ones to choose from.

For my layout I wanted to create a spiderweb background so I cut the Hey Spidey Background file but to keep it soft and sweet still just like the sweet girls in my photo,  I cut it out on white cardstock and filled in sections of it with some patterned paper.  I then added a border of patterned paper to frame the web cut file.

I loved the 'Too cute to spook' title from the 31 cut file set was just perfect for the sentiment that I wanted to portray. I cut this out on black cardstock pop dotted it to add some dimension to my page and used this as my title.

Some close ups:

One of the things I loved about the Hey Spidey Background file is the texture that the lined bits of the cut file creates on my layout.

Lastly, I added some heart and star stickers to the points of the web and scattered some enamel dots into the negative spaces.

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog - are you creating any Halloween layouts this year?

Cheers

Michelle

Remember Together | Pretty Little Studio October 08, 2016 07:00

Hi everyone, Michelle here with a new layout featuring the gorgeous products from Pretty Little Studio in combination with the amazing Just Nick cut files of course!

My layout features lots of the 'Here Comes The Sun' collection as I just loved the whimsical nature of the die cuts and the pretty patterned papers.  The papers on my layout all came from the  Up in the Air  6"x6" paper pack which was just perfect to add behind the cut files on my layout.  I was inspired to use a piece of soft yellow cardstock and I cut out the Heart Explosion Background and added a piece of the Colorful Dots patterned paper behind the large heart.  I then added lots of layers of the different die cuts and labels around my photos from the collection.  To give my layout a bit more interest I added some scallops from the Simple Scallop Strips cut file that I cut out in white cardstock in layers under my photo and also added a strip at the bottom of my layout that I filled with more of the patterned papers.

Thanks for stopping by the blog today and I hope you are enjoying our collaboration with Pretty Little Studio.

Make A Splash | Stuck Sketches | Michelle Whorwood September 21, 2016 07:00 2 Comments

Hi Everyone, Michelle here with a layout to share as part of the Stuck Sketches collaboration.  I really couldn't wait to do a multi-photo layout of our recent holiday to Fiji  and the sketch Laura designed was a perfect one for it !!

I couldn't resist adding my photos on the angle and the rest of my layout flowed from there.  I had been eyeing up the fabulous Summer Fun and Summer Lovin' cut files and enjoyed using the icons from the Summer Fun set as embellishments on my page - there are lots of elements that are perfect for beachy photos in this set.  I then created my title   'Make A Splash' from the Summer Lovin' cut file set.   Don't be afraid to split up the cut files to make them work on your layouts as I have done on my title here to frame my bottom photo.

Thanks so much for stopping by the Just Nick blog today!  I hope you play along with this sketch as there is an opportunity to win a $25 store voucher to the cut file store!!

You Anchor Me | Summer Fun | Michelle Whorwood September 12, 2016 07:00

Hi everyone,

Michelle here with a new layout to share with you today.  I had loads of fun with this one creating my background with the 'anchor' cut file from the 'Summer Fun' cut file set.

This is such a fun set to use with lots of cute icons for summer.   I ungrouped and enlarged the 'anchor' and cut it out on patterned paper and placed it under my photo to 'anchor' my photo so to speak!  I also used the play on the word anchor in my title 'You Anchor Me' which is a fun way of linking my photo to the cut file as well.   I also cut out the pineapple and the watermelon shape from the cut files and added them as embellishments - mainly because this photo was taken of hubby and myself on our recent trip to Fiji.

Some close ups:

Thanks for stopping by today, I hope I have inspired you to scrap some summer photos using this cool cut file.

Listening Bear | Jillibean Soup | Michelle Whorwood August 27, 2016 07:00 2 Comments

Hi everyone, Michelle here with a layout to share with you today with Jillibean Soup.

I was lucky enough to receive the fabulous Alphabet Soup II collection to create with.  Wow ... I just love the colours in this collection.  I decided that I really wanted to create a layout using the new 'Quilted Background' cut file using the 'Mixed Veges' patterned paper and then team it up with lots of pops of colour from this collection to create this vibrant layout of my daughter.  At school, when they have been good listeners they get to bring the Listening Bear home with them for some adventures before they head back to school the next day.

The Pea Pod Parts Die Cuts were the perfect embellishments for my layout - I just love using the word sentiments in die cuts to help portray how I feel about my photo and I ended up using them instead of doing lots of journalling on my layout.  They are perfect for layering and I have done so in a visual triangle to balance out my page.

Zoo Day | Michelle Whorwood August 08, 2016 07:00

Hi everyone, Michelle here with a new layout to share with you featuring a background cut file called 'Funky Rectangles'.

I really wanted to showcase how easy it is to create lots of texture on your layouts with cut files.  Therefore, I kept my colour palette really simple and created my layout with no patterned paper.   I love the tone on tone look with the white cardstock cut file on the white cardstock background.  I think it works really well with my black and white photos which were also really busy in colour.

Some close ups:

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today - I hope I have inspired you to create some textural layouts with your cut files.

All About Me Michelle Whorwood July 09, 2016 07:00

Hi everyone,

I'm super super super excited to be joining the Just Nick Studio Design Team.  I have been using cut files for awhile now and I just love how they add extra dimension to my layouts and that there are a such a variety of different ways you can include them in scrapbooking.

I am a stay at home mum to 3 gorgeous kids, Liam aged 12, Taylor Grace who is 5 and Aimee Rose who is 4 and I live just north of Auckland in New Zealand with my hubby Gary.  I have been scrapbooking for almost 10 years now and started when my eldest was about 2.  Being creative and recording our memories keeps me sane and if I go too long without creating a layout then I get really grumpy!  You only need to ask my kids what is my favourite thing to do and they will respond 'Scrapbooking'. I'm super lucky I get to spend some of the time when my kids are at school and kindergarten to spend time creating and of course SHOPPING for new gorgeous supplies too.  When I am not scrapbooking I enjoy spending time with my young family and hubby - we go to our caravan at the beach in the summer and we have holidays to Fiji coming up soon as I hate the cold winter here in NZ.   I share my scrapbooking layouts on my blog here and also on instagram here

Here is my first layout:

I used the Let it Shine Background cut file as my background and cut this out on patterned paper and then added a white cardstock circle with Right Now on it as it fitted the selfies I took of myself a couple of weeks ago and I liked how it created a centre piece on my layout.

Cut Files used: Let It Shine Background and Right Now

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today - I am looking forward to sharing more of my layouts with the Just Nick cut files.

Have a good one!
